About Quantum²

Quantum² is an innovative skills development program provided free of charge by Thomson Scientific. The program is designed to help information professionals expand their services and improve the flow of information within their organizations.

Quantum² History

In 1993, Dialog launched the first Quantum program, starting with a bulletin board for posting ideas and tips, and a job opportunity network. In 1994, the program evolved to include workshops presented at Dialog Updates. These early sessions provided tools and techniques to help information professionals promote their services to clients and develop their own skills for organizational effectiveness. Those themes are still relevant today.

The concept of InfoStars was introduced in 1995, with feature stories in the Open Dialog newsletter on a number of information professional role models. Two years later, Dialog, with SLA, sponsored the first in a series of distance learning programs simultaneously broadcast to multiple downlink locations, featuring a panel of Quantum InfoStars speaking about their best practices.

In late 1997, the first Quantum website was introduced and then expanded as the Information Professional Portal. In 2001, the Quantum program was reborn as Quantum², merging the best of the previous program with new initiatives to demonstrate Dialog's continued support for the information professional. The newsletter was reintroduced as an electronic resource and web conferencing enabled new ways to expand the workshop program.

In Dialog's alignment with Thomson Scientific, the Quantum² program continues to grow and is now a Thomson Scientific-wide program. As always, ongoing feedback from Quantum² members will help shape how this program will evolve over time to meet changing needs.
