Relationship Management

The Politics of Value
Steve Alexander
InfoWorld 14 May 01
Interestingly, it seems we are not alone: IT professionals, too, grapple with the challenge of how to communicate their contribution and value to senior management. The article emphasizes the need to address outcomes rather than methods and benefits rather than tools, and to build personal credibility and rapport: "Cultivate management even when you don't need anything" … without boring them with unnecessary details outside their own expertise; and "communicate one on one wherever possible" to encourage help-me-understand questions that may not get raised in a group.

Be Proactive--Communicate Your Worth to Management
Lucy Lettis
Information Outlook 3(1) January 1999: 25-29.
"Have you ever found yourself defending your credentials, expertise, and skill set as an information professional? Why does it seem most people accept an M.B.A. diploma is more than just a piece of paper, while the person in the office next to you has little appreciation for the credentials of the degreed information professional? While many of us have had the good fortune to work in organizations that value and respect the information professional, others must guide their managements up very steep learning curves."

"Highsmith Inc. uses a knowledge-management tool of extraordinary power to give employees all the information they need. Its name is Lisa Carreño. She's the librarian." The featured individual has moved on, but the article endures by casting a spotlight on her strategic role and relationship with top management.
