Perception Analysis

How the organization views the information center and the information professional is important for determining how best to ensure the clients served are fully aware of the link between the company successes and the function of the library. One way to achieve this is by performing an opinion audit. Anecdotal evidence from satisfied clients is one source of insight into what perceptions exist, but it is more important to know what impressions non-clients have. An opinion audit need not be a formal survey or an in-depth research project; it can be carried out through a series of conversations with selected individuals representative of the employees in the organization. In actual fact, every conversation — no matter what its occasion or purpose — can be an opportunity to probe for the views held of the library.

Key Questions:

  • Am I taking action to gather information on perceptions about the information center's staff and services?
  • Do current feedback systems focus only on certain clients and constituencies and ignore others?
