SLA CONFERENCE NEWS
*****************************
Dialog had a high profile again this year at the Special Libraries Association (SLA) annual conference in New York. Ongoing efforts of Dialog continue to empower information professionals around the world through the expanded Dialog Quantum2 information professional development program and through support of SLA. According to Libby Trudell, Dialog senior vice president of information professional development, which encompasses the Quantum2 program, "Empowering the information professional is a major priority for Dialog. We do so because we believe that information professionals have a strong and dynamic role to play in their organizations. Offering our own initiatives through the Quantum2 program and working closely with the SLA is a powerful combination to articulate our commitment."

Dialog-sponsored activities at SLA included the Tech Zone series, offering information professionals tips on how current technologies can be utilized within their organizations; eight Quantum2 workshops; keynote speaker -- Stewart Brand, the well-known futurist and author, and  many division activities..

Finally, three new InfoStars -- Lucy Park, Richard Huffine and Vincent Mariano (http://www.dialog.com/pressroom/2003/infostars_060903.shtml) -- were added to the Quantum2 roster of role models in the information industry at a reception  in the SLA exhibit hall.  Look for future notice of their profiles on the Quantum2 Web site (http://quantum.dialog.com/).

QUANTUM2 FORUM
*********************************************************
Beginning this week, Dialog is  offering a new feature for Quantum2 - an online discussion forum covering timely and provocative topics.  The forum will be lead by professionals in the industry who have experience, expertise and insights on their particular subject.  The first of these forums will be "Offering Competitive Intelligence Services," led by Daphne Raban.

Daphne is currently a doctoral candidate at Haifa University's Graduate School of Business, researching issues related to ownership and subjective value in the trading and sharing of information, and teaches a course in Competitive Intelligence in the MBA program there. Born and raised in Israel, she earned her undergraduate degree at Iowa State University in 1988. Daphne received her master's of science degree from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1992. She then worked for a manufacturing company, leaving four years later to start her own independent information consulting business, one of the first in Israel.

Additional information on Daphne's work at the University of Haifa is available at (http://gsb.Haifa.ac.il/~draban/lemonade). Daphne also serves as coordinator for the University of Haifa's Center for the Study of the Information Society. She is also active in a number of professional organizations.

Daphne invites your participation in the forum with the following thoughts on Competitive Intelligence:

The importance of Competitive Intelligence is unquestionable. However, we need to think creatively about its positioning. Is CI understood well by our clients? Is it utilized correctly? What can we do to streamline CI into corporate decision-making? How should our CI techniques adapt to the changing business climate? How can perception of CI be changed from "expense" to "investment?" These and many other questions are the focus of this discussion forum. CI experts as well as novices are welcome to share expertise, voice concerns, suggest new techniques and technologies,  and ask questions. Anything CI-related goes!

Here are some  topics we will be discussing::

Please stop by the forum, join, read and consider what you find there, and share your thoughts with everyone.  This is a great opportunity to network and learn.

You will need to click on the "Join" tab the first time you go to the forum, in order to register as a forum member.  One thing to be aware of when registering - the login is case-sensitive, so you may want to use all lower case for your login name.
