Dear Quantum2 Member...

You are probably well into planning your objectives for the year, so this month we’d like to share some insights on thinking laterally about the skills needed to succeed as information professionals. To that end, our feature article offers ideas on how to more effectively share information in order to support the wider strategic objectives within your organization.

In this issue:

Spotlight on Quantum2 InfoStar – Dennie Heye
Lobbying with key stakeholders, both internally and externally, to improve information management is a major part of Dennie Heye's role at Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP) in the Netherlands.

The Many Facets of a Quantum2 Coach
You may know about the work experience of our Quantum2 coaches through the occasional feature profiles we have published in the past, but I’ll bet you didn’t know about the other multi-faceted activities they undertake. Quantum2 coach, Jamal Cromity (featured in the March 2006 issue of Quantum2 Highlights ) wrote a Spotlight article for a recent issue of the ALA Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) Library Worklife Journal (Vol. 4, No.10, October 2007).

In the article, he describes how he has drawn on skills such as web design, environmental analysis, product development, strategic planning and quality development to expand his various roles during his professional working life…and comes upon the realization that he is not alone; that this is "a road many travel."

Quantum2 Topic of the Month: Sharing Information

In our continuing series on the concept of FUMSI (Find, Use, Manage and Share Information), guest writer Robin Neidorf of Free Pint Ltd. advocates how we all need to learn to share information.

We All Need to Learn to Share

At the 2007 SLA Annual Conference in Denver, CO last June, the opening keynote speech by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore offered a perspective on information work that is not often highlighted: How effectively do individuals and organizations share the information they have? His message about strategic communication of information is urgent – as his Oscar-winning film argues, the survival of the planet may well be at stake. The central issue in solving the problem of climate change is not one of needing more information; rather, it is about effective communication of the information that’s already been found and validated.

‘Relevant context’ was a phrase Mr. Gore used repeatedly during that speech. In today’s world, access to information is only part of the challenge and perhaps the easiest part to overcome. Information has, in fact, probably never been more accessible than it is right now. More difficult to figure out, however, is the role information professionals can and should play in communicating information effectively.
