Q: How can CrossSearch search results be marked so that they will appear on the marked list?
A: Records for each product may be marked from the CrossSearch summary list and you no longer have to navigate to the full record to perform this function. Marked records will appear in separate Marked Lists according to the Web of Knowledge database they are from, for example Web of Science or Current Contents Connect.
Q: I've selected "Last five years" but I'm only getting results from four (three, two, etc.). Why?
A: Each institution subscribes to different years of data for each product. If your institution has subscribed to the latest two years of data, results from only those two years will be returned, even if a longer time span is selected.
Q: When I search for an author, I'm not getting correct results. Why?
A: Because database author editorial rules allow for different presentation of author names, the best way to search for an author in multiple databases is to enter the name with the last name first, followed by one initial and an asterisk.
Q: When the search box is used on the CrossSearch section of the ISI Web of Knowledge home page what kind of search is being performed?
A: A quick topic search can be performed from the first screen that is searching across all available hosted content. However, there are more search options available with the two links displayed to the right of the search box. Clicking on "More search fields" takes you to a new page where there are additional search fields and timeframes available. The "What databases am I searching?" link takes you to a page where you can select the databases in which you want to perform your search.
Q: Iżve selected one product from the "Filter results by product" option. Why am I seeing multiple buttons next to some of the records on the CrossSearch results summary?
A: When searching is restricted to a single product, the search is only done against indexes for that product. However, if a record is present in multiple products, buttons from each product will continue to display. Simply click the button for the product you are interested in to view records from that product. You can also mark any records with the check box next to the button to add to your marked list.
Q: Why is an article appearing as new data in more than one week?
A: records are indexed in more than one database. If a record is indexed in one database after it appears in another, then the record's entry in each database will be presented as new.
Q: Why is this record's source title (or patent assignee) being shortened?
A: Very long titles or patent assignees (greater than 125 characters) will be truncated on the Source list with an asterisk (*) after the 124th character. When searching for these items, you should also truncate after the 124th character.
Q: Can I start a CrossSearch from other places than the Web of Knowledge home page?
A: Yes, you can now launch a CrossSearch from any Web of Knowledge product except Derwent Innovations Index. When you perform a topic or title search from QuickSearch or General Search, the Results Summary page will show at the top of the results a hyperlink to "CrossSearch: View additional results in other databases". Clicking on this will launch a CrossSearch based on your Topic search terms in the other CrossSearchable products available for your subscription. Only unique results from the other databases will be displayed.
Q: Can I create search profiles and save search profiles in CrossSearch?
A: Yes, this function is now available in ISI Web of Knowledge 3.0 and can be managed like other product search profiles. CrossSearch profiles can be saved either to the ISI Web of Knowledge Server or your local desktop from the Search History page as with any Web of Knowledge search. Any CrossSearch profile that is saved to the server will now display on the Open/Managed Saved Searches screen.
