A number of these enhancements are in direct response to initiatives such as our

Thomson Scientific works continuously to enhance Thomson Pharma to match the needs and way of working of our customers at all stages of drug discovery and development. We will continue to develop Thomson Pharma to add as much functionality and content as we can.

If you’d like to provide feedback, or highlight an area in which Thomson Pharma could be developed that would be useful to you, please complete our feedback form or talk to your sales representative.

At a glance

The upgrade to Thomson Pharma adds improvements in the following areas:

  • matching more closely the functionality of our legacy products
  • increasing the functionality of the home pages, portlets and alerting functions
  • adding new and more powerful search and browse tools
  • adding a number of new reports features
  • increasing export and print facilities
  • extending customization and personalization options

Home pages, portlets and alerting

You’ll notice the change the moment you log in — Thomson Pharma now greets you by your name, rather than by your username. But this isn’t the only change we’ve made. The old General Interest speciality home page has been replaced with two user-focused pages:

  • News and Meetings — gives you a quick overview of the latest developments in the industry. This is the new default home page
  • Intellectual Property — shows the latest patent information, including which therapy areas have seen the most activity during the last week

Note: The General Interest speciality home page is no longer available. Users found the quantity of general information did not match their needs. You can of course create a custom home page that contains this information.

In addition, we’ve added features that enable you to:

  • Keep up to date with the latest information on patents and current opinion journals. Alerting is now available in the Patents Landscape, Patents Gazette and Current Opinion Journals portlets.
  • See the first 20 titles in customized alerts, giving you a better idea of the relevance of your results before you begin mining information.
  • Filter your custom home pages by therapy area. This is available only for home pages created after the upgraded version of Thomson Pharma goes live.
  • Access the new Strategic Drugs News portlet. This portlet pulls into
    Thomson Pharma
information on strategic drugs from SDdb.
  • Add the Current Opinion Journals portlet to your custom home pages.

Search and browse

No matter how extensive the content, a database is only as good as its search engine and browse functions. We’ve kept ease of navigation and power of search at the heart of Thomson Pharma with a host of new features that enable you to:

  • Search news categories to find news items on specific categories — such as licensing opportunities, new clinical trial results — at the click of a mouse.
  • Use the consistent indexing by therapy area, action and technology applied to drugs and core patents to search drugs and patents together. In the Drug Form search area, simply click the option to include core patents in your search.
  • Browse targets to see at a glance what protein/gene targets are covered (there are more than 5,000 in total!) and how they are classified using a simple hierarchical layout.
  • Search for or browse meetings, just as you could in IDdb. Now you can see exactly what meetings are covered by Thomson Pharma, filtered by month or year.
  • Check what criteria you used by displaying your search strategy at the top of each results page. This is particularly useful if you need to re-run a saved search — you can see at once what you searched for.
  • Return quickly to the menu from even the longest report using “back to top” links added throughout every page.

Reports

The heart of Thomson Pharma is its data. We’ve added some exciting new reporting features that enable you to:

  • View up to 100 compounds associated with a patent with chemistry thumbnails for DCR records. Now you can select compounds of interest within an Intellectual Property report by their structure.
  • Create specific searches for similar patents with easy-to-use IPC codes and Derwent Manual Codes, now displayed within the Intellectual Property report alongside the Derwent code description.
  • Link directly from the Literature & News report to the Chemistry report — and vice versa.
  • See who is developing drugs for a particular target with the competitive pipeline portlet. This interactive, colour-coded chart shows you how many drugs are at each stage of development and who is developing them.

Export and print facilities

One of the biggest strengths of Thomson Pharma is the way in which it encourages collaboration and data-sharing across your teams. We’ve made this even easier by enabling you to:

  • Set up colleague alerts so you can share alerts throughout your organization. All you need to do is enter the email addresses of the colleagues to which your alerts should also be sent.
  • Quickly get a reliable hard-copy of your report with the printer-friendly page button.
  • Grab and manipulate chemical structures. All chemical structures are now provided in both .gif and Mol format. Having altered the Mol file, you can then search for the new structure in Thomson Pharma.
  • Select the way you export results to Microsoft® Excel. Previously, you could only export the report as shown on the screen. Now you can choose to export your results in any of the four predefined results formats, independent of your current view.

Customization and personalization

The new, greatly expanded personalization area enables you to:

  • Select the number of entries displayed in the results summary. You can choose to view 10, 20 or 50 entries.
  • Choose how results are displayed from a greater range of options — summary, summary with structure, summary with abstract, summary with structure and development status.
  • Edit and delete the customized portlets on your personalized home pages. Two portlets are configurable in the new release — Financial Update, Focused Journals — with more to follow.
